Legacy 911 technology was created in the 1960s and 1970s and was designed to be used with landline telephones. Although Legacy 911 can send a voice call with minimal data such as the caller’s address and telephone number, it cannot possibly keep up with the technological demands of the 21st century. Next Generation 911 (NG-911) allows callers to access 911 from many types of communications devices and applications. NG-911 allows additional data to be sent with the call. That additional data can be anything from vital patient information from their medical devices, to photos of a crime scene, or even video footage of an accident, etc.
NG-911 not only allows for rich data to be sent with the call but it also provides greater redundancy than the Legacy 911 network. NG-911 also affords Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) or 911 dispatch centers more flexibility in transferring and rerouting calls during emergency overflow events thus creating “virtual” PSAP consolidation. Most importantly, wireless calls are routed to the PSAP based on the latitude and longitude of the caller’s handset (device), not the sector of the tower processing the call (which may cover multiple communities or counties). This provides greater accuracy when routing emergency wireless calls to the correct PSAP which in turn reduces the time spent transferring calls.
The NG-911 network, built and operated by Peninsula Fiber Network, LLC (PFN), delivers 911 emergency service voice and related caller data to Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) via an Emergency Services IP Network. This network is private, secure, redundant, monitored, and also includes IP availability. The NG-911 network not only meets but exceeds the National Emergency Number Association (NENA) i3 standards.
PFN NG-911 service provides the features demanded by both urban and rural PSAPs:
Fully redundant, call-routing network that meets (and exceeds) NENA i3 standards
Dynamic Call Routing - Calls can be routed to other subtending PSAPs during peak traffic periods
Inbound and outbound texting with improved location accuracy and language translation services
MEVO disaster recovery phone— Hot standby for your PSAP
Network management tools (a veritable suite of network traffic monitoring and real-time reports)
